haha. Ya, I have seen that. I'm not so worried about that type of thing myself as it has a lot more useful advantages than any offset disadvantages. That of course depends on who you ask. Just wait till that kind of content is live, archived and searchable for any time event in any place. Now that makes it dangerous for finding anything about anyone.

What scares me is Google's street view. You can get a person's name and determine the state they are from, look that up on any of several sites - if not directly in Google - find their address and (nearly) go peep in their windows! I read that one county banned Google from doing street view.

Armen. Yes, you have a exceptional point! I definately agree!

People really should live and be consistent in their lives and present the best picture of themselves in all situations. Now, there are always some events and people you are more comfortable that you'll have more jokes and parties or experiences with, what is odd that so many people seem to thing they need to advertise this about themselves. It does no good and leaving an impression that is the best person you can be is always the way to present yourself in any public atmosphere.

I would add that individuals who are congruent, in that their normal self matches their social media self, have much less effort to expend. Their minds don't have to constantly worry "what might get out there?", because it is only beneficial for them when their true representation is spread out through the social networks.

Thank you guys for your comments.
@Daniel - What you are doing to promote yourself and your work/attention online will definitely help you in the future.

@Richard - Thanks for the comments and additions. Your brand is what becomes accessible online so being the brand you want is critical. I'd say that simply living the brand you want to show is one step further which makes it real. Perhaps I need an article on that topic though...

@Lance - I'm glad to inspire you to look at your profile and put some attention to it. It will pay off to do that!

This is great Mike. It really makes me think about what I have out there. I think I've been selective, but now I'm going to check things out a bit better.

Great post mike! I'm glad to see someone talking about both sides of social media. You have to be ever so conscience of what you post because it can really come back to haunt you at a later time. Social media is an awesome tool when used "properly" though! You just have to always remember the image that you are trying to brand yourself as!

I used to avoid social media sites for fear of slipping up and making myself look bad but recently I've decided to proactively flood the web with positive, professional content under my name.

Now I'm a member of many social networks and I use those in conjunction with my blog to take control of my name online. This way I've got some built-up tolerance against embarrassment by Google.
