I think it really is important to stay away from gossip at work, we see it all the time, in the end playing with gossip it will lead to no good, and if you play with Gossip, it can bite you hard too.

Till then,

I've been fortunate to make a number of good 'work' friends who have turned into great friends outside of the 9-5 grind. In fact, some I've known for 15 years after we stopped working together. Not everyone who we meet at work will translate into a friend outside of work but using some of your proactive suggestions, we can create real, long-time friendships.

@Arswino - I do agree that the relationship are important but would extend that to life in general, beyond the work and career.

@Bunny - Great to hear of evidence where this works for you, it's especially important for people with independent careers.

Dragos - yes, as a manager, if you don't put some kind of friendship or relationship first, you can't effectively manage others. It's vital.

@Jonathan - thanks and I like your statement how it reaches to quality of life, not just limited to work itself, I certainly agree there.

This post covered the topic very nicely. All of our relationships have an effect on the quality of our life. How we interact with those around us says a lot about how highly we value them. People love to feel valued.

Making friends at work is so important when you are managing people. Warming up a relationship otherwise rigid because of the hierarchy is extremely important. Of course, you must draw a line sometime, but it's better to have friends than employees.

Thanks for sharing!

I work independently but often have dinner parties for clients and invite friends to offer some pizazz to the conversation.

At my previous job I connected with some very knowledgeable people who I still network with.I do enjoy seeing the other side of people in there private life.Usually they are very different.

Excellent article,Mike.
