Keeping in contact with your connections from time to time is very important. I make it a point to personally call my friends when it is their birthday. I see on facebook when their birthday is, but rather than sending a message via text on the internet, which is not as powerful, as a personal phone call. It throws them by surprise when you call them to wish them a happy Birthday. I also try to call during the Holidays to wish them a merry Christmas, small things like that add up.

@Bunny. Thanks so much, its true how easy it is to stay in touch and it leaves us with many opportunities and joys from hearing from contacts regularly.

@Ben – The time it takes is nothing compared to what you can get from regular contact with connections.

@Steve – good points about the traits it takes to keep connections going consistently. Its true. Perhaps I ought to write an article about methods to do this, but I use various methods, social networks and email but by far the most important and common, the telephone. That thing people often forget how to use. Call them and talk or leave a simple message, that’s all it takes.

Very good article in terms of the importance of staying connected. It does take generosity, purpose, and discipline to give of yourself, and to stay connected consistently. Just out of curiosity, how do you keep your contacts organized, and what is your preferred way to connect with them?

I like the idea of having a diverse set of connections. You never know how you will be able to help each other out in the future. You do lose a lot when you don’t stay in contact with business connections. It takes a little bit of time but it is really worth making the time to do it.
