These are excellent tips you have written about resume writing. Professional people's resumes are all unique (as it is a reflection of you as a professional) so a template only should serve to guide you in crafting it.

If you're self-employed the resume is not usually something you actually have, but after reading this post I am actually sitting down and drawing one up. If only for me to see what my actual value is to myself, if not to a prospective employer. We tend to sell ourselves short, don't we!

It's important to keep your resume ready at all times. Its never good to have to update a resume last minute… The resume tells your employer what you are capable of doing within the company! It gives you a chance to stand up above your competition. =D

Till then,

I absolutely share the idea of updating the resume twice a year or as it is necessary.Your work and profession is like a big wardrobe where all the knowledge and skills and experience must be laid on the shelves and kept in absolute order.

@Kristi - Good point. If you can change the titles on your resume to match the role more, even better. Executive Summary may be better for some roles, but not all I suppose, but if you change it, it gets noticed more easily.

@Jonathan - Your blog is the result of your work and whether its full time or not, it still should be summarized by a list of accomplishments. As a hiring employer, whether that for your services directly or by me finding you, a resume will still highlight your accomplishments without me having to guess them from your blog. How do you measure your success there? Testimony? Sales? Impact or influence? All these are accomplishments and are still very much worth outlining and having on hand. There is of course many other values in reviewing your accomplishments, not just for a resume, I just wouldn't suggest leaving to others to infer.

@Steve - Hmm... Not sure I know what you mean exactly. Are you thinking along the lines of creating the image you want, instead of avoid the images you don't want?

I wrote a guest post about creating and being your brand here at the positivity blog. Please check it out and let me know if you were thinking something else...

Mike, these are great thoughts regarding maintaining a resume. I would also be interested in seeing a post about proactive online digital resumes. I know I read your last post about going on the defensive when posting online (social networking, etc). However, I would like to see a post on how to go proactive when online. Just a thought :)

Mike: Great thoughts! So often people get slowed down in job search because they don't have this important document ready. Also, candidates may want to consider substituting an "Executive Summary" for "Objective." By creating a really powerful 3-4 sentence summary of their qualifications for the role, they can help ensure that the reader gets a good picture of what they have to offer. Thanks for your thoughts!
