I am all for fun in the workplace, because nothing inhibits creativity and productivity more than an austere and stark working environment. Individuality should be encouraged and nurtured, but all within reasonable limits, of course. There always need to be firmly established boundaries, always.

Its always good to add a little fun to the workplace, this makes the workers love what they are doing and makes it more interesting. Even though there is fun in the work place, they still get work done because they are motivated to do it. There should be a balance of fun and seriousness in the workplace.

Coming from a creative video game design environment, I totally agree with your points made in this article Mike.

1) Each of us are allowed to "pimp" out our workspace with figurines, books, posters and anything else that inspires our creativity.
2) All of our meetings are upbeat and not too long so that the energy level is not dissipated.
3) We have monthly artistic challenges to keep our skills sharp and keep our passion for art going.

4) A new concept we have tried is to have an "open space" environment where we all can see each other and communicate with one another quickly(which is faster than instant messaging most of the time)

So a workplace that encourages "fun" will always be more productive, given that it is done properly.

I believe that fun in the workplace starts with us. If we give premium on the positive aspects of our workplace then fun will come naturally. However, if we focus on the distressing aspects, work becomes a drag. :-)
